Senior Accountant

An established not-for-profit organisation is seeking a Senior Accountant to lead its financial operations, compliance, and strategic financial planning. This is a full-time, permanent role based in Cork. 35 hr working week – no overtime.
The organisation operates multiple charitable entities and must comply with all relevant statutory, regulatory, charity, and company law requirements. The Senior Accountant will oversee financial management, reporting, controls, budgeting, and audit engagement, and will support a network of local offices and committees across the region.
This role reports to senior leadership and works closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure strong governance and effective stewardship of financial resources.
Key Responsibilities
Operational
Maintain day-to-day accounting records on a computerised system, prepare reconciliations, and oversee payroll, expenses, and financial transactions in line with prompt payment legislation.
Prepare and present quarterly management accounts, budgets, and business reports.
Prepare annual consolidated accounts for the organisation and its associated entities in line with recognised reporting standards, charity requirements, and company law.
Manage all organisational bank accounts and investment portfolios.
Oversee and review insurance cover on properties and assets.
Liaise with external auditors and ensure timely submission of all statutory and regulatory returns.
Manage relationships, negotiations, and contracts with service providers on behalf of the organisation.
Strategic
Lead the design and implementation of financial priorities and long-term planning aligned with organisational strategy.
Develop, implement, and maintain financial procedures, controls, and structures to ensure effective, efficient, and economical management of funds.
Contribute to strategic visioning, financial planning, and funding strategies.
Prepare funding applications and associated reporting.
Provide leadership, guidance, and training to local finance committees and relevant stakeholders.
Regulatory Compliance
Maintain and manage the financial risk register, ensuring mitigation strategies are effective and regularly reviewed.
Oversee internal controls, fraud prevention measures, and risk-management processes.
Ensure organisational policies and procedures meet best-practice governance standards.
Ensure all charitable entities comply with the Charities Regulatory Authority’s annual reporting requirements.
Essential Criteria
Membership of a recognised accountancy body (ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
Minimum 5 years’ post-qualification experience in a senior finance role.
A relevant third-level qualification or equivalent experience.
Strong proficiency with accounting software systems.
Extensive working knowledge of financial regulations, including Charities SORP.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and deliver results.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively.
Strong organisational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritise effectively.
Full clean driving licence and access to a car.
